Insurer in plan to expand to Rift Valley

Underwriter APA has announced plans to increase its regional footprint and expand its network in the national breadbasket zones of the country.

The composite insurer said in a statement on Tuesday it intends to position itself in the productive Rift Valley Province and the Mount Kenya regions.

“We are very optimistic that we will achieve positive returns through our investments because these regions are on the recovery path,” APA managing director, Mr Ashok Shah, said.

The CEO said the firm was on top of that banking on venturing into the great Lakes region and an expanded East Africa Community.

APA’s move comes four years after it was created through the merger of short-term businesses of Apollo Insurance Company Limited and Pan Africa Insurance Limited.

With a turnover of nearly Sh3 billion, it is presently the second largest general insurer in Kenya. Mr Shah was speaking in Meru town after opening of a new branch.

“The decision to open this branch is driven by an in-depth research on the needs of this area,” he said.

APA’s regional growth has seen it get established in Uganda. It also holds a 34 per cent stake in Reliance Insurance Company (T) Limited and it explores going into Rwanda and Burundi.
