Technology in sand dams building

We as APA have made it Happen - KAGONZA DAMAminipoa Maji Maisha project is a private sector initiative founded by APA Insurance Limited whose strategic goal is “enhancing water security for all” in the society. It aims to mobilise and channel the private sector organisations and individual resources towards availing clean water. The vision of the initiative is to increase accessibility to clean water and reduce the commuting distance to fetch water for the women and the girl child.

In 2006, in line with our corporate strategy for poverty alleviation in our community, A P A has funded water preservation and dam projects in the rural areas. In collaboration with other partners, APA is committed to building 100 dams in the next 3 years providing clean and safe water to many households.

What is a sand dam?
  • Reinforced concrete wall built in a SEASONAL SEASONAL RIVER BED - 2 TO 4 meters high and upto 90 meters across.
  • A pipe is built into the dam, going 20 meters upstream.
  • Within one to three seasons, the dam fills up with sand, which filters water through the pipe built into the dam.
  • There is usually no surface water and a well is sunk on the river bed to access the water.

Benefits of the sand dam
  • Provision of year-round source of water
  • Clean water
  • Transformation of the environment
  • Increase in tree survival rate and allows other crops to grow
  • More trees and plants means more food for humans and animals
  • Increasing overall biodiversity
