Community DevelopmentOn the areas of APA’s CSR is community development. The company and partners continued with the following projects that have now become its hallmark Aminipoa Maji MaishaThe Aminipoa Maji Maisha project sponsored by APA and Apollo Insurance and working with other partners continued to support projects geared towards providing communities in arid and semiarid areas with clean and reliable water supply. This year the trust is current building a dam in Kativiani location in Makueni District. This will be the third dam constructed and will serve over 2500 persons, once completed.APA/Apollo Youth Initiative ProgrammeAPA Insurance has continued to support education of needy and deserving children through the APA/Apollo bursary scheme, which is now in its third year. The company supports a local school; CheletaPrimary School in Mji wa Huruma and Githogoro villages near Runda estate located in the outskirts of the city. The students are from these two villages and have many challenges. The bursary sponsors the best performing girl and boy from the school in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE)examinations who would not be able to have enough support to proceed to a secondary school. The first beneficiaries of the bursary are now in form three while the last two recently joined form one. It is worth noting that the school's performance has also greatly improved since the bursary programme was introduced due to competition.Mushroom GrowingFollowing the training of 25 members of Runda Youth Sports Association (RYSA) on mushroom growing, the group has embarked on aggressive growing and selling of mushrooms to improve their economic status. APA has also assisted the group to sell the mushroom in retail stores as well as to individuals for domestic use. The group is planning to venture into other projects in order to diversify and supplement their earnings.Recreation through SportsThe RYSA football team was promoted to the Nationwide League from Super-League in 2007/2008. Apart from the Super- League matches, APA organizes tournaments for the team in order to boost and continue to nurture the soccer talents of the youth in Mji wa Huruma and Githogoro villages. The funds received from mushroom growing project also assist the youth to fund them through the nationwide league tournaments.EnvironmentAPA has partnered with Daystar University for their environmental week at the campus. We have sponsored the planting of trees as well as clean-up of the environment around the campus. Our objective is to plant and maintain at least 1,000 trees in the next three years. In addition, through the Aminipoa Maji Maisha sand dam projects, we emphasise to the communities that they need to plant trees along the river beds to help curb soil erosion, provide food in the case of fruit trees as wells as in beautifying the landscape. A minimum of ten trees are allocated to each household that benefits from the sand dam built for planting and maintenance.
